The Next DTV Could Be Scooby-Doo! Stage Fright

11

While there hasn’t been a announcement yet about the next DTV, we may know the title thanks to a couple Amazon listings. Amazon lists a “Movie Reader” and “Junior Novel” for Scooby-Doo! Stage Fright. The listings offer this description.

The gang from Mystery, Inc. is visiting Chicago to sing on the hit TV show “Talent Star.” But they soon discover a spooky phantom starts is haunting the opera house where they’re scheduled to perform! It looks like there’s a mystery to solve! Can the gang crack the case of the Legend of the Phantom?

There was a stage show a few years back called Scooby-Doo! Stage Fright. But that plot involved the gang investigating a haunted movie set.

  1. I wish they would come up with a new monster. Like, a time traveling entity that is in a state of dimensional flux, or the non-corporeal manifestation of fear. All the plots about phantoms, ghosts, vampires, werewolves, aliens, etc. are getting old.

Also, what ever happened to the WWE/Scooby crossover? Did it get cancelled?

  2. Original title. Not. It sounds dreadful. Mystery Inc. are professional singers? Right...

  5. As much as I adore anything to do with 'Phantom of the Opera' (and this is probably going to have POTO elements - I mean, opera house? Singing competition? Seems pretty clear to me), I think this will be lackluster. I agree with the 13th Ghost, in that it seems a touch tired for plot. You know that one of the girls will be kidnapped because of their voice (although it would be REALLY neat if one of the guys was kidnapped by a female Phantom), and the guy in question will get all squiggy and have to do a daring rescue or some such stuff. Then again, it's early days yet. Didn't the early synopsis for 'Abracadabra-Doo' mention Daphne's sister Melissa? We ended up instead with Velma's sister Madelyn, a VERY different change of pace and character focus. So you never know, it could be interesting, or it could have an original twist to it (I'll hold out for the gender role switch, personally).

As for original plots, it's difficult to come up with one that will appeal to kids and not be too "adult" or "scary" (despite past DTVs contradicting that GREATLY). Personally, I'd be okay with a reboot of 'Reluctant Werewolf', which could be REALLY cool if done right and had some of the more nonsensical elements cut out. Or even a more serious Batman/Scooby Doo crossover. Like, for example, the gang could get caught up in Gotham City with the Arkham Rogues and brainwashed by Dr. Strange into being their new proteges based on their appearances, personalities, and hobbies. Like, Velma could be sent to Riddler, Daphne to Poison Ivy, Fred to Two-Face or Joker (maybe Riddler, given his trap penchant), and Shaggy to Scarecrow. Then Scooby would have to work with Batman to get his friends back to normal. I dunno, it sounds cool to me.

I really find myself missing the more supernatural aspects of past films, to be honest. They were interesting, and pushed the limits on what Scooby & the Gang could and couldn't face. It would be cool to see them all face against a vengeful spirit that possesses people (maybe even possessing them in the process), or even getting caught up in a family curse at a reunion. Maybe they could time-travel back to Grecian times and face off against some villain who wants to become a God amongst men with his technology, and end up facing mythical figures like the Minotaur, the Hydra, nagas, and famous Grecian figures.

Actually, I wouldn't be totally against a reboot of 'Reluctant Werewolf'. With the current animation style, it could be AMAZING.

Well, I've rambled off-track. For now, I'll hold out hope that the Phantom film will be acceptable, if nothing else.

  6. Looks intersting, but for some reason it has American Idol written all over it. I'm with you guys when you say that we need a better story... I would even like to havesomething like Scooby and the gag stepping into an alternative reality where their villains were real monsters and since there was no Mystery Inc. to stop them they would have ended up conquering the world or something.

Or perhaps, something that I always wanted to see happening, the gang going against some of their biggest foes, who have been brought to life by a real supernatural entity (we could have various other recurring characters appearing also, like the Hex Girls, Melbourne O'Reilly, Vincent Van Ghoul, Del Chilman, and many others, in order to help the gang stop them).

Of course, Idon't know how Mystery Incorporated is going to end, but they could come up with new DTVs based on the series, giving it a more serious and creepy look, but still suitable for kids.

  7. I agree with Fantoma on a RW remake if done right, as well as a serious Batman/Scooby crossover, but only if done in the original design of Batman The Animated Series. No second version of BMAS, and no Justice League version either. I like that idea as well Fantoma. If I may suggest some alternatives. Maybe Daphne and Mad Hatter, who will have her play the part of Alice. Also, how about Shaggy and Mr. Scarface? Also known as The Ventriloquist. The best part would be that Shaggy would act the same as always, except he would have a dummy that he would have to hold on to and subconsciously give an alternate personality to or else the dummy would kill him. It's the same case with The Ventriloquist. Velma going to Riddler is perfect. I'd like to see her in a green suit/skirt with purple glasses. As for Fred... I think he'd be a good henchman for Max Zeus, or even Bane.

I agree with Johnny as well. In fact, if they were to go to an alternate reality, I would suggest Silent Hill. That would be the ultimate crossover, and it would give us a twisted look inside the minds of each of the characters.

  9. Yes, the article is from 11 years ago, but, it has the same plot as the movie. I find that strange.
