Review: Scooby Doo! Curse of the Lake Monster

Rating: 3/5

Well, Scooby Doo! Curse of the Lake Monster aired on Saturday, and color me disappointed. Curse of the Lake Monster isn’t a terrible movie, but it is a very average one, with a easily pridectiable mystery. Basically, Scooby and the gang take summer jobs at Daphne’s Uncle’s summer club to pay for a barn they burned down during one of their mysteries. But the club ends up being haunted by a frog monster. Meanwhile Shaggy bides for Velma’s attention, but Velma isn’t acting like herself.

The biggest problem with Curse of the Lake Monster is that there’s not enough Scooby. Granted, they have a smaller budget with these movies, but Scooby was practically non-existent in this movie. And when he did show up, it felt like he was only there for comedic purposes. In fact the movie is very corny at times, maybe too corny, even by Scooby Doo standards. And then there’s the fact that they made it painfully obvious who the villain was. I had it figured out from the opening scene that Velma was going to be the culprit. The Velma being possessed angle was interesting, I just wish they hadn’t made it so obvious.

Why was Scooby left out at the end? The ending was a bit of the downer. I was also hoping for ending like The Mystery Begins, but the ending{or the music} just didn’t do it for me.

Now, I didn’t hate the movie. The CGI for the lake monster is very good for a TV movie. The cast, in my opinion, greatly improved from The Mystery Begins. I think the whole Shaggy wanting to date Velma sub-plot, while the movie focused too much on it, was handled much better than Mystery Incorporated. And in classic Scooby tradition, there are plenty of guest stars{Nichelle Nichols FTW!}. Oh yeah, we finally got to see how the gang got the name Mystery Inc.

Overall, not a terrible movie, but could have been much better. Hopefully, if WB decides to do a third movie{and I hope they do}, it won’t feel so rushed. 3/5.

  1. I agree on every point but one. The lake monster looked very good for a tv movie. I think it look great for any movie,tv or big screen! Maybe they should have used some of the money on more scooby instead of making the frog look so purty.

  2. I totally agree on every point!! Not enough Scooby, and a weird ending... I wish they would take a old classic episod of "Scooby-Doo, Where are You?" and turn it into a full-lenght live action movie!!

I prefer what they have done with "Mystery Incorporated" than the live action movies...
