SpiderScooby’s Thoughts On Wrestlemania Mystery

So even though Scooby-Doom already reviewed Wrestlemania Mystery for the site{cause he’s much more of a wrestling fan than I am}, I finally got the chance to see the movie and I wanted to post my quick thoughts on it. This won’t be a full review because I’ve only been able to see it once, and frankly my memory’s not that good. So here goes.

I was really surprised how much I enjoyed Wrestlemania Mystery considering I’m not a fan of wrestling or WWE. When this movie was first announced, it sounded like just a quick cash grab. Is it? Maybe. Is it completely ridiculous? Absolutely{I mean c’mon, WWE City? Really?}. But that doesn;t detract from it at all. The WWE stuff didn’t annoy me at all like I thought it would. In fact, it makes for some of the funniest moments in the movie. I also liked how they were able to tie the Ghost Bear to some of the WWE superstars.

One minor complaint{more of a nitpick really}: Can we get rid of the whole Fred and/or Daphne is jealous over the other liking someone else cliché please? I mean, how many times have we seen this?  In fact, I feel like they should just give the relationship thing a rest in Scooby-Doo for awhile.

Overall, this os one of the better DTVs in recent years. It even has me more interested in that Flintstones/WWE crossover that’s supposed to be coming out next year. 4/5.

  1. It was as you said surprisingly good. The chase scene in the cave is what "Scooby-Doo"'s all about. The final "battle" was typically good. "Scooby-Doo" isn't about fighting the monster, but this has WWE in it so of course they milked it for all its worth. I didn't however, think Velma's fan screams over it were necessary. It felt like someone at WWE told the writer and WB's animation department to make sure she freaked out. (I understand it, I just don't agree with it.) I also didn't like her continued fugly look. Second time they've done this now after Mecha Mutt Menace and it looks this way in Frankencreepy. I don't see the need for it.

I thought the walk in the hall of fame was terribly animated. It looked close to the motion comic productions. I also didn't like how it ended with Fred, Daphne and Velma in their familiar poses, it just didn't look good.

Last but not least, Daphne was the worst part of the film (and Grey didn't do her any justice. I don't know what she could've done with what was written, though? It made me wish she'd give the role up, despite how much she's liked). Her well... jerk attitude at the beginning and then her bimbo attraction towards Cena was unbearable. I'd rather she just not have been in it at all.

I pointed at a lot of complications on Scoobypedia. I tried my best to be professional about it, but it may have sounded a bit like my own disliking of what happened. It still doesn't change the fact that there was a lot to point out, very easy things to point out.

  2. I thought it was surprisngly good as well. It did a lot of things right, but it did several major things wrong. The premise of a ghost bear actually turned out to be pretty good. The problem is that this mystery would have made more sense set in a forest rather than in some gimmicky town. With the TNSDM the gang would always run into the famous guest stars in an environment that suits the mystery. We didn't see Scooby and the gang heading to Sonny and Cher land or the Don Knotts amusement park, they always met the stars in neutral locations. Problematically this movies setting is over the top and distracting from the mystery.

The second problem was simply the volume of guest stars, there were just too many. At times it felt like they were just forcing in more wrestlers for the sake of just being there. Plus some of them were just plainly bad actors, and the sudden bad performance among the good performances was jarring.

Had this movie been Scooby and the gang bumping into five WWE stars on a camping trip I think it would have turned out better. As it is though they jammed in to much, and the focus on the WWE was too great. It was enjoyable, but definitely held back by the WWE.
