I’ve always wanted to see a new version of The New Scooby-Doo Movies, Whether that would be on TV or in comic form, it would be fun to see Scooby and the gang teaming up with guest stars every week. Enter Scooby-Doo Team-Up. Combine two of my favorite things, superheroes and Scooby-Doo, and you have comic gold. So does Scooby-Doo Team Up #1 live up to my expectations? Well for the most part, yes it does. Scooby-Doo Team Up #1 offers a fun-yet short-adventure for the Scooby gang and the Dynamic Duo.

The Mystery Inc. crew are investigating sightings of a giant bat creature around town. The gang runs into Batman and Robin, who inform them the bat creature they are hunting is Man-Bat, a half man, half bat genetic hybrid. They hear a strange noise from a nearby mall where they find three “Bat-Men” robbing a department store. Batman and Robin easily take the three Men-Bats down, who of course turn out to be guys in masks. Shaggy spots another Man-Bat, but when he tries to pull his mask off it turns out to be the real Man-Bat. Hijinks ensue, including Man-Bat taking Shaggy and Scooby on a high flying trip and Daphne attempting to use a baterang with humorous results. Batman eventually injects Man-Bat with a antidote, turning him human again. The issue ends on a classic Scooby moment where Scooby scares Shaggy with one of the Man-Bat masks.

I had a lot of fun with this issue. While that episode of Batman: Brave and the Bold a few years back was great, it was very specifically based on those old episodes of The New Scooby-Doo Movies. I wanted to see a more modern Scooby/Batman team up, And that’s pretty much what I got here. I was satisfied with the portrayal with Batman and Robin here. Sholly Fisch does a good job here not making the Dynamic Duo too campy or silly. The character interactions are also top notch. I loved all the references to the DC universe and the nods to the old TNSDM episodes was clever. The second half of this issue has some of my favorite moments. One of the funniest moments is when the fake Men-Bats try to escape and Daphne tries to use a baterang to stop them.

Speaking of Man-Bat, I thought they handled him nicely, but it will be interesting to see in future issues how they handle the more supernatural elements of the DC Universe. Has this version of the gang run into real monsters, or has this not happened in this continuity?

My one major complaint with Team Up #1 is that it feels really short. Maybe it’s the absence of a back up story, but I was expecting it to be a little longer. I’m basing my review off the digital release, and the story is short enough to where the digital version is cheaper than the print issue.

Scooby-Doo Team Up is a fun adventure with Batman and Robin. It loses a point in my book for feeling a bit short, but overall, I was happy with this issue. If you’re a fan of Scooby and Batman, I highly recommend picking this up. 9/10.
