Scooby-Doo! Mecha Mutt Menace Review

The Plot: The Scooby gang is attending the Annual Science Expo, where Mecha Mutt, a giant robotic dog designed for Mars exploration, goes haywire and starts attacking the Expo.

I guess I’m in the middle with Mecha Mutt Menace. It’s not terrible, and while there are nice little moments spread throughout, it’s not something particularly great. It’s a slightly above average Scooby-Doo episode. I think most of my issues come from the plot. The whole thing felt rushed, like it would’ve been better served as a 72 minute movie than a 22 minute special. It probably would have helped give a better reveal to the villain, which is painfully obvious from the get go. There’s also Mecha Mutt, which is definitely a cool villain, and like the most recent DTVs, feature a final action set piece that features Shaggy and Scooby in a robot suit facing off against Mecha Mutt. While this final battle is a lot of fun, it definitely could have benefited from that longer running time.

And then there’s Fraphne. Honestly, I’d wish they’d just move on with the whole relationship thing in Scooby-Doo already. It never seems to go anywhere, and it never serves the plot. Here we get the same old “Daphne is jealous over Fred liking another girl” plotline we’ve seen many times over the past decade.

Most of Mecha Mutt Menace’s best moments come from it’s humor. Shaggy and Scooby being obsessed with space food, Shaggy and Scooby getting stuck in the wind tunnel with Mecha Mutt, Shaggy and Scooby driving “Mucky Mutt”. In fact, Shaggy & Scooby were probably the best part of this special, There’s also a pretty funny moment at the beginning with Mecha Mutt cutting Velma’s glasses in half with his laser beam. Oh, and Shaggy and Scooby ending up in space at the end. That was great!

As far as specials go, Mecha Mutt Menace is probably the weakest so far. Had it been one of the DTV movies, I probably would’ve liked it better. Mecha Mutt is saved by its humor and Scooby/Shaggy moments, but it still leaves me with the feeling it could have been so much better. 6.5/10.
