Review: Scooby Doo 1&2 Collection{Blu-Ray}

7/10

Well, I got The Scooby Doo 1&2 Collection on Blu-Ray recently, and I am a bit mixed on it. Not to say this is a bad release. I’ve been wanting Scooby Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed on Blu-Ray for awhile now, and these films do look great. But I am a bit dissapointed in the special features, especially on Scooby 2.

The Movies

I reviewed these movies last month{you can read them here and here}, so I don’t have much else to say about them. I do enjoy both movies. Scooby Doo 2 is the cartoon come to life. Scooby-Doo has it’s problems but is far from terrible.

The Blu-Ray

The Scooby Doo 1&2 Collection comes in a standard size eco friendly case. First thing is that the disc artwork is disappointing. When Scooby-Doo came out on Blu-Ray back in 2007, it at least had the same artwork as the DVD. Here, however, the discs just have the movies’ logos on a static grey background. This is a nitpick more than anything else, however I was expecting something more.

The reason for buying this set, of course, is for the picture/audio quality.  Both movies are presented in 1080p high definition.It should be noted that Scooby-Doo is the exact same disc that was released a few years back. I was hoping Warners would do a new transfer{it especally needed a new audio track}, but that;s not to say it isn;t solid. These movies are perfect for Blu-Ray, and it shows. Monsters Unleashed is the superier disc in both the audio and video department. It’s defenitely a step up from the first movie. Scooby 2 sports  a DTS-HD MA track wheres the first movie is only Dolby Digital 5.1.

The extras are where it’s a mixed bag. Most of the special features are carried over from the DVD releases. The best thing here is the two cast and crew audio commentaries on the first movie. These are really fun and entertaining to listen to, especally the cast commentary. Then there’s the deleted scenes, including the awasome alternate opening I wish they would’ve used. There’s also a 22 minute making of documentery, some featurettes, and a music video. The movie’s trailer is also included{which was oddly not included on the DVD}. Scooby 2‘s extras are far more disappointing. There’s only commentary for the deleted scenes, which are far less interesting than the first movie’s. There’s also some {very}short featurettes and a couple music videos.

Despite my reservations about the extras, I highly reccomend picking up The Scooby Doo 1&2 Collection, especally if you have a good sized HDTV. Both movies have very solid transfers. And for the price, you can’t really go wrong.

  1. I was a little thrown off by the disc art myself.

    I'd watched the first on tv a few months back and it looked horrible!
    I was pleasantly surprised when I got the blu-ray.

    I agree 100% with every thing you said.
