BTW, I don’t think I’ve mentioned this on here, but Kate Micucci is replacing Mindy Cohn as the voice of Velma. Don’t worry though, Mindy will continue voicing the character in the DTV’s.

  1. I'm actually looking forward to seeing how Kate Micucci does in the role. As much as I've enjoyed Mindy Cohn's version of Velma I've always felt she didn't really sound that much like the original Velma. Which isn't a bad thing mind you, I just don't think she ever did it as well as Nicole Jaffe.

    1. Are you kidding me? Nicole may have been the original, but to me, she didn't portray her in positive way and she was always going for a grandma angle (as the two that followed did). She was always insulting Scooby and Shaggy in a rude way, unlike Mindy who not only would do it in a sarcastic tone, but didn't come off like a complete jerk. She also brought a new energy that had never been seen in Velma before (except for B.J., who also succeeded where Nicole failed). I'm not so sure about her now, but when Mindy took over, she was exactly what Velma needed.

Also, Nicole always did it for the money. She didn't take any interest until years later and even after that she still didn't seem to care much about the role. I don't know why she even bothered to return. I'm assuming for the money, because she certainly didn't have any personal interest.

I actually think it's Grey who needs the break. I'd like to see someone else's take on Daphne. But Daphne's a little different in the new series, so I'd to see what Grey can bring to her.

Like I've said before on Twitter, check out Kate as Irma on the new TMNT show. I'm sure they'll be quite similar, and Irma always seemed Velma-esque to me. As I've also said on Twitter, I actually think she sounds like Linda, but Kate would be cheaper.

      1. Well I'm not really talking about how Velma's being characterized (Which as an actor there's very little control), I'm talking purely about the sound of the voice. For me Jaffe is my favorite (BJ comes pretty close).

When we're talking about character then yes, Cohn's Velma wins by a mile (If not several). The writers actually expanded her character beyond the basic know it all and made her less of a drag. Jaffe had a disadvantage as the writing dipped lower for every new incarnation and towards the end of her tenure the writing was pretty awful.

  2. I feel Mindy Cohn's voice is the best fit for Velma's personality. On a related note Casey Kasem must have enjoyed voicing Shaggy because apparently he didn't seem to need the money. I'm glad Mindy is still voicing Velma outside of this series. Kate just doesn't have a very Velma-esque voice. She sounds so depressed. Velma's voice should a mix of smugness and sarcasm. Velma's biggest character flaw is her obsessive need to be right, that she reacts negatively to being proven wrong.

  3. Also Nicole's Velma was actually a little nicer to Shaggy than any of the others. She carried around his medications. He carried her spare glasses. They were always dancing together at school dances. The rudeness actrually came with Pat Stevens' portrayal. Marla Frumpkin's Velma was kind of boring actually with as much personality as a rock. The current main voice cast fits their personalities. Lillard's Shaggy like comes off as a laid back hippie like boy who's 30 years too young to be a hippie, seems like an idiot but sometimes manages to focus and thus shows that he is actually of normal intelligence. Frank Welker IS Fred and Scooby. There's nothing else to say about that. Delisle-Griffin brings out Daphne's optimism and Cohn's Velma is sarcastic but kind (except when proven wrong).

    1. I think they over did it with SDMI. He never shut up. I'm glad they did just so they can not do in the next one. I just hope the "cleverness" of using lesser words in this new series doesn't just rely on charades. I didn't like that in WNSD because it seemed pointless when he could already communicate far beyond that.

    2. I can't agree enough. I mean it's nice that he stepped up when a fellow actor died, but honestly his Scooby never compared. He just never hit the energy that Messick had.

Admittedly I think his Fred voice is getting a bit worn too.

  4. Interestingly enough I'm pretty sure it's Kate Micucci voicing Velma in this Lego short:
