Scooby-Doo Movie Title Revealed!

Mystery_Inc.

The title of 2018’s Scooby-Doo reboot was announced today at CinemaCon. Titled S. C. O. O. B., the movie will serve as a launching point for a Hanna-Barbera cinematic universe. The movie was described as “our first shot at unlocking the Hanna-Barbera universe”. Some brief concept art was apparently shown as well.

Yeah, the title is a bit strange. There’s also the question of how they’re going to cross these movies over. You can’t exactly have The Flintstones meet Scooby or Wacky Races(unless they fall back on the time travel trope again).

New “Scooby Apocalypse” Details From Wondercon

SA_MainCover

A ton of new Scooby Apocalypse details and images were revealed at Wondercon this weekend. Here re the main points we can expect from the book(if you don’t want to be spoiled, best stop reading here).

SA_MysteryMachine

-Scooby Apocalypse will be more adult and was heavily influenced by Afterlife with Archie. Dan DiDio likened it to “Scooby-Doo Meets The Walking Dead”.

-Fred and Daphne are washed-up YouTube stars who have their own reality show where they debunk ghosts. They head to Burning Man when they hear reports about werewolves running amok.

-Velma is a part of a think tank of young geniuses who develop a nanite-virus which is supposed to turn people good. it has the opposite effect, however, bringing out the worst in people while transforming them into monsters. The gang must put aside their differences and band together to try and save mankind.

-Scooby is a lab experiment and Shaggy is his handler. Instead of speaking, Scooby has a device on collar that shows his thoughts as holograms.

And here are four out of seven variant covers which you can pre-order here.

The Scooby Apocalypse Is Coming From DC Comics

ScoobApocalypse_Final
A new slate of Hanna-Barbera comics is coming from DC Comics. The “crown jewel” of these new books will be Scooby Apocalypse, a modern-day take on the classic cartoon. Scooby Apocalypse will be helmet by Jim Lee, Howard Porter and Keith Giffen.

scooby-doo-jim-lee

“I’m a huge Scooby Doo fan, as I think most people are,” admits Lee. “I mean, look at these iconic series and they were cultural touchstones for everyone. All my kids know of Scooby Doo from the various cartoons and live action movies, and we’re in a period where you have people my age that are spending their days thinking about cartoon and sci-fi action movies. It’s a multigenerational obsession at this point, and we just thought it would just be really interesting to take the cartoon version of these characters and see where they would be if we took what existed in the very first iteration of the cartoon and moved it into this day and age.”

Scooby-Apocalypse-Inked

DC will also be giving makeovers to The Flintstones, Wacky Races, as well as Future Quest, a shared-universe book which feature the likes of Space Ghost, Johnny Quest, The Herculoids, Birdman, and many others.

So what do you guys think? Are you looking forward to these books or is DC taking the wrong approach? I personally cannot wait to see what they do with these characters. As much as I don’t mind the current Scooby comics, I could never really get into them because (obviously)they’re aimed at a very young audience. It will be interesting to see how they handle Scooby without the restraint of having to only appeal to that one demographic.

Be Cool, Scooby-Doo! Returns November 30

BCSD_poster

For those waiting on new episodes of “Be Cool, Scooby-Doo!“, you won’t have to wait much longer. Be Cool, Scooby-Doo! will return with an all-new Christmas special on Monday, November 30 at 12:30p/11:30a Central.  Here’s a plot summary from Scooby Snax.com.

The gang spends Christmas in the original Christmas City – Bethlehem- where the Moravian Star plays a key part in the mystery that surrounds the town.

I know I’ve only posted a review of the pilot, so here’s my thoughts on the series so far. I honestly wasn’t expecting this show to be this good. I still don’t like the animation. But once you get past that, it really is a well written and funny show. This is the exact opposite of Mystery Incorporated – and I say that in a good way. The humor is the highlight here. The slight changes they’ve made to the gang are good. I like how Fred isn’t a clueless dork obsessed with traps, even though they put some of that into Daphne. I could do without Daphne’s “Daphneisms” each episode{but really, it isn’t that bad}. Kate Micucci does an okay job as Velma. Overall, it’s a great series. Unfortunately, Cartoon Network has been yanking the show around its schedule like they did with SDMI, so that’s disappointing.

Don’t forget to check out the Be Cool, Scooby-Doo! episode guide!

Retro Comic Review: “Scooby-Doo Surf’s Up!” Part 3

Goop On The Loose Review

Two youths head into the Tunnel Of Love and are almost immediately attacked by two man-shaped pink globs.  Mystery Inc. is enjoying opening day at the theme park when they hear the screams and run to help.

1

Art: Joe Staton, talk about a mixed bag!
Parts of this one look like they were done in such a rush that it’s almost tragic, while other parts look like he toiled away many an hour to get them just right. The highlight being the entire 4 page rollercoaster sequence, which is one of the best sections of a Scooby comic I’ve seen.

4

The low points being almost any shot of Freddie, who looks awkward and chunky.
There is, again, that gross overuse of the blank single color background too.
Mostly early on is where I have a problem with it, in the back half of the story it’s used logically so I can’t complain there. In quite a few spots, Velma feels a bit too frog-like.
I think I say this (or at the very least feel it) a lot with Staton’s artwork, but there’s way more good than bad here.
So, we’re still on the plus side with this one.

Story: Goop On The Loose by Rurik Tyler.

The Gang shows up at the Tunnel of Love and finds the two kids and the theme park owner, Mr. Tonklin, who immediately recognizes them as the mystery solvers with the van. Tonklin stresses the importance of the big opening day firework display going off without a hitch then he splits, leaving the attacked twosome to explain how they were assaulted. As they’re describing the incident, Scooby sniffs around and finds a glob of the pink stuff that was hurled at the lovers.

2

Fred wants to get a closer look at it but Scoob already horked down the evidence, which was theme park favorite cotton candy. That’s right folks, we have every little kids dream creature, and old school Scooby favorite, the Cotton Candy Glob, this time multiplied!
So the gang splits up to search the snack stands but, given the task, Velma suggests somebody chaperone Shag and Scoob, which falls to Daph.

Daphne, Shaggy, and Scooby interview one attendant and find out the dude what worked that stand previously, with his buddies, was a scientific genius and had sorted the food and supplies by chemical composition. As soon as our three heroes step away from the stand they’re attacked by a trio of cotton candy globs!

3

The globs chase them onto a roller coaster and start firing wads of candy at them.
As I said in the art portion of this review, this is among the best Scooby art I’ve ever seen. I know it sounds simplistic, it’s 3 carts going up and down hills, blobs of candy floss flying through the air, but it’s great!
It truly is a thing of beauty.

5

So, as the chase continues, on of the creatures extends it’s arm out toward our heroes’s cart and Shaggy grabs ahold of it thinking it’s a free snack, and the monster immediately starts retracting it’s arm and reeling him in. As Shaggy starts to be pulled out of his seat, Scooby and Daphne quickly grab his legs, and in the struggle the candy is pulled off the monster’s arm revealing a hose.
They pull Shaggy back into his seat and bring the monster with him, pulling so hard that they rip the person buried deep within the mountain of candy out.

Mr. Tonklin, Fred, and Velma run up as the coaster comes back to the beginning of the ride. Daphne steps forward with the unmasked perp that Tonklin quickly recognizes as the science genius he recently fired for screwing up the parks food supply system.
And this here is where I start having problems with the whole thing.

6

I’ve always been a believer that journey is more important than the destination, but if you go on a magnificent journey full of stunning views and then you trip and fall face first into a huge steaming pile of elephant dookie…that can, in some way, affect the whole trip.
First off, they don’t name this kid, or even his buddies, everybody simply calls him “science genius kid” and that’s just plain lazy. Call the little brat anything, just give him a bloody name for cripesakes! The other thing that bugs me is that his motivation is so ambiguous, he says “with my chemical knowledge, I could have made your snacks the envy of the world!”…and???
Are you mad you were fired?
Are you mad that the old dude wouldn’t listen?
Why not go to his competition?
What the hell do you want kid?
It’s extremely rare for a Scooby villain to be called a genius which is why I think the ambiguity of his unspecified motivation bugs me so much. I mean, even Gibby Norton and Jason Priestly tried to use their brains to impress somebody (Velma in both cases), but captain wow over here seems to have done it all simply because he was bored.

So the cops take what’s his face and his evil super best buds away…but there are two more candy monsters, Mr. Tonklin notices. The monsters unleash streams of goop from their arms and glue Tonklin, Fred, Daphne, and Velma’s feet to the cement.
Then an unearthly voice rings out telling them that their souls will forever be devoured in the pits of…okay, I’m just screwing with ya!
Really, Shag and Scoob covered themselves in candy. The hungry duo proclaims this their tastiest case ever. Tonklin leads the entire Gang away with promises of a lifetime passes and free food as Shaggy and Scooby eat the candy off of themselves.

7

It was a great story, no doubt about it, but that ending is a tough pill to swallow.
I can’t honestly sat that it ruined it completely, but it did put a stanky little funk on a story I was really groovin’ on, man.
The art does make it totally worthwhile though, check it out for that alone.

Scooby-Doo POP Vinyl and Dorbz Figures Coming From Funko

POP

I don’t know about you guys, but for the past year I’ve been into collecting these POP Vinyl figures. You know, those little 3-inch figures with the big heads{you really can’t miss them, they are EVERYWHERE}. My most wanted POPs have been Scooby and the gang, and it looks like that is finally happening. Scooby-Doo POPs, POP Rides, Dorbz, and Dorbz Rides were teased on Funko’s forums last week.

Funko_Scooby

Funko put out Scooby-Doo Wacky Wobblers back in the day and have been putting out Hanna-Barbera POPs for the past year or so.

POP_SS

Dorbz

While there is no release date for these, they will most likely be released next year sometime. Let’s hope we get more than just the five members of the gang. A red Mystery Machine variant with a red-shirted Shaggy would be nice.

Be Cool, Scooby-Doo! “Mystery 101” Review

vlcsnap-2015-10-06-18h12m59s694

Be Cool, Scooby-Doo! Is probably the most controversial incarnation of Scooby since Get A Clue. From the animation to the designs of the characters, this show had a lot of things going against it. I tried to keep an open as much as possible despite the animation choices.. While I can’t say I loved the first episode of Be Cool, it was a very good start to a series that shows lots of potential.

BCSDEp1_004

Let’s start with the most controversial aspect of this show: the animation. I admit, I wasn’t really a fan of it upon first viewing. I think it comes down to the design of the gang.  Something about them just irks me the wrong way. It’s weird too. The rest of the animation is just fine. I like the color palette, I like the design of the villain. It’s the designs of the human characters that bug me.

BCSD_promo__005

Thankfully, the writing totally makes up for the animation. Be Cool is meant to be a lighter approach to Scooby after the darker Mystery Incorporated. I usually don’t like when they put all the focus on comedy. I prefer a good balance of comedy and mystery/horror. I think it works here though. There were many great moments throughout the episode. Shaggy and Scooby getting stuck in the vending machine with the ghost, Velma’s “I hurt books” line, even Daphne’s hand puppets. I was worried that gag would go beyond the first episode. Thankfully, that doesn’t seem to be the case.

BCSDEp1_002

There are a few changes to our beloved gang. The biggest one is Kate Micucci as Velma. I didn’t end up liking her as much as I thought I would, but she’s perfectly fine in the role. Interestingly enough, Some of Fred’s personality has been toned down a bit and put onto Daphne. Daphne seems more ditzy in this version. Hey, as long as Fred’s not obsessed with traps, that’s a good thing in my book.

BCSDEp1_001

Overall a decent start to a new series. While the animation leaves a lot to be desired, the writing and humor makes up for it. If you are on the fence about this show, I say give it a chance.
