SD:MI “The Secret Of The Ghost Rig” Review

Sunday, July 24th, 2011

Trouble is admist in Crystal Cove when the crystal doorknobs start disappearing off the town’s buildings. And to top it off, a Ghost Trucker is scaring people off. Meanwhile, Dahpne’s parents try to find here a “new” boyfriend.

While it’s not perfect, this episode is entertaining. The Ghost Trucker is such a ridiculous and wacky villian, it totally works. I also love how zany and crazy Fred’s’ trap gets in this episode. And while, the creepy tone from the last episode isn’t here, there are some good suspensful moments in this episode.

I did think the villian stealing the doorknobs just to find one little diamand was kinda stupid. Surely, there is a easier way? And I wish Mr. E hadn’t helped the gang in solving the mystery this early on, but that’s only a minor nitpick.

I’ll be honest. I’ve never been a huge fan of “dumb” Fred. But it’s nice to see him doing some real detective work here.

The subplot involving Daphne was humorous, but of course, we knew how that would end.

Overall, a entertaining episode. Unlike episode 2, I only had some minor issues with this episode. 3.5/5.

SD:MI “The Creeping Creatures” Review

Sunday, July 24th, 2011

Following up on a clue from Mr. E, the gang investigates the town of Gatorsberg. But when the engine from the Mystery Machine goes missing, they are forced to stay in a creepy hotal haunted by three gator men.

OK, as far as second episodes of series go, “The Creeping Creatures” is pretty good, but is far from my favorite episode of the series for a few reasons. This episode got a lot of things right. But there were one or two issues that brought this episode down for me. But first, the positive. I think they really got the tone right in this episode. Creepy and dark, but maybe not too creepy and dark. In fact, this is what I’d imagine the original series would be if it were made today. This episode is also one of the episodes where I think they got the perfect blend of that creepy tone and the humor. There is some hilarious lines in here.

And thankfully, The Velma/Shaggy relationship is still tolerable here. Velma hasn’t become a control freak yet.

My one major gripe with this episode is that the villians were too obvious. Yeah, I know Scooby Doo villians are kinda easy to figure out, but this was too obvious even for Scooby.

A couple other random thoughts:

I find it kinda funny that the parents all came up with random excuses for why they couldn’t pick up their kids in the a creepy town in the middle of the night. Score one for bad parenting!

How did Mr. E get the engine out of the Mystery Machine so fast? My theory is that he had it replaced with the Mystery Machine double from episode 25, and when the gang solved the mystery, he switched it back to the real one.

Overall, a good episode, but certainly not the best episode of the series. 3/5.

Review: SD:MI Episode 15 “The Wild Brood”

Tuesday, May 31st, 2011

Orc bikers. Video game nerds. One very average episode of Scooby-Doo! Mystery Inc.

The Plot: All you really need to know is, Fred invites the rest of the gang on his his and Daphne’s date. Daphne gets angry, and then falls for a gang of orc bikers who are being framed for a robbery, eventually leading to the gang having to catch the real culprit.

Yeah, so this is one of those types of episodes where the more I watch it, the more I dislike it. “The Wild Brood” isn’t a bad episode, it’s just very average, and there were too many things bringing this episode down for me to really like it. For one, I know Daphne is upset over the whole date thing, but would she and Velma really go off with some creppy biker dudes they just met? Seemed rather strange. And then there’s the fact that the gang seemed especally stupid in this episode. I find it a bit of a stretch that they don’t even know what a swordfish is.

My biggest problem with this episode was the whole motivation. The Wild Brood are really a bunch of tech nerds who are following a train to protect their new video game console. One of their own tries to steal this new game console, and it’s up to the gang to stop him. OK, I’m a gamer and a geek as much as the next guy, but to go through so much trouble just for a silly video game console seemed stupid to me.

Of course, this episode wasn’t all bad. We do get a nice moment between Velma and Scooby{even if she forgets it by next episode}. And I know some people had issues with the scene in Daphne’s bedroom. Honestly, I didn’t think it was that bad. I think her in her bikini was worse. And Closet Sheriff is hilarious.

Oh yeah, and there’s “SHE DIGS ME! SHE DIGS ME!”

Am I being too nitpicky about this episode? Probably. Unfortunately, I found it hard to look past some of the issues in this episode. 6/10.

Review: SD:MI Episode 14 “Mystery Solvers Club State Finals”

Tuesday, May 10th, 2011

Another week. Another episode of Scooby. I was really looking forward to this episode. Scooby meets the Scooby clones done in the style of classic Scooby. Sounds like a great idea. And it paid off really well.

Now I have to confess, I’ve never watched any of the “Scooby Clones”. Kinda past my time, and I never saw them on Cartoon Network. That being said, Having these shows cross over was great. The interaction between the “sidekicks” was hilarious, especially Funky Phantom and Speed Buggy.

Funky Phantom being the villian was hilorious, though I’d imagine Funky Phantom fans are kinda pissed.

The animation looks just like old Scooby. They did a really good job capturing the look of the old series.

I do have a couple minor complaints. One being “Lord Infernicus” is a Ghost Rider knock off{though not a big deal since he’s a awasome villian}. Second: It would had been nice if the other members of the gangs to have a bigger role in the episode.

Oh yeah, how do you give CPR to a car???

Overall, a fantastic episode, and one the best episodes of the series yet. 9/10

Review: SD:MI Episode 13 “When the Cicada Calls”

Tuesday, October 26th, 2010

Ok, so a few random thoughts about last night’s episode of Scooby Doo: Mystery Inc. I enjoyed it, though not as much as the last couple of episodes. The idea of using a swarm of bugs as a villian was cool. However, I have a small nitpick about that, as it was so clearly obvious that the bugs were CGI. Maybe it’s just me but if I can tell that it’s CG with my bad eyesight, that may or may not be a good thing.

It’s nice to see the Fred/Daph relationship is finally going somewhere. Now if  only Scooby, Shaggy and Velma can work out their problems…

The professer reminded me alot of Ben Ravoncroft from Scooby Doo and the Witch’s Ghost. Speaking of which, why is Scooby taking classes, lol.

Overall, a good episode, but could have been better. I can’t believe we’re halfway through the season already. The show has really been fantastic so far. Here’s to hoping the second half is just as good!

Review: SDMI: “Howl of the Fright Hound”

Saturday, October 9th, 2010

Before I get into my review of the episode, a couple things I wanted to mention. First I’ve added a new section to the image gallery which includes over 200 different covers from the various Scooby comics from over the years. Also, I should be posting my reviews of the first three Scooby Doo live action films later this week in anticipation of Scooby Doo! Curse of the Lake Monster.

After a short hiatus, Scooby Doo! Mystery Incorporated returns with another solid episode. A robotic dog is attacking Crystal Cove and framing Scooby for its crimes. Mystery Inc rush to clear Scooby’s name before the Fright Hound puts him down for good. The mystery in this episode is pretty decent and not as predictable as some of the other episodes. One of the improvements this new series has over previous series like What’s New Scooby Doo is that the villains have been consistently good. The Fright Hound is such cool villain, and a scary one at times too.

Speaking of robotic dogs, there were many references to other movies in this episode, including X-men, Silience of the Lambs, Total Recall, etc.. There were several nods to both Terminator and Aliens. The end fight was very similar to both movies. My favvorite had to be the crazed Yogi Bear being hauled off at the end. I guess Ranger Smith got tired of all those stolen pic-i-nic baskets!

We finally meet a member of the original Mystery Incorporated, Professor Pericles, and man, this bird is creepy! It will be interesting to learn more about Pericles in future episodes. Does he have some kind of psychic powers? How did the guard get his hand duct taped to his stun gun? And what exactly does Fred have to do with the mystery of Crystal Cove?

And the parrot wasn’t the only creepy character. If I were Velma, I’d be extremely creeped out by that kid Jason too. Jason’s mother was a nice little plot twist{taken directly out of Friday the 13th}.

Scooby kicked so much butt in this episode! It’s nice to see another side of Scooby. He’s still the couwardly great dane, but he wasn’t afraid to give that dog a bone.

Shaggy and Velma breaking up: This was bound to happen eventually. IIt’s nice to see Shaggy standing up for himself for once. Both Velma and Scooby have been jerks about Shaggy{though he wasn’t exactly helping the situation either}. I will say, I am a supporter of the Shaggy/Velma relationship, and I do hope they get back together when they sort out their problems.

Overall, a really enjoyable episode, and I can’t wait to see where the mystery of Crystal Cove goes.

Review: Scooby Doo! Mystery Incorporated: A Breath of Fresh Air For the Scooby Franchise

Wednesday, July 14th, 2010

 Rating: 4/5

Let’s be honest, the last Scooby series, Shaggy and Scooby Doo: Get A Clue! was one big pile of Scooby Poo. Not only did it stray away from the mystery solving, everything from the animation to the voice acting made Scrappy Doo look like the best character ever created. Thankfully, Scooby Doo! Mystery Incorporated is the complete opposite, bringing Scooby and the gang back to their roots with a generally spooky first episode.

After being jailed for solving another mystery, Fred, Daphne, Velma, Shaggy, and Scooby decide to investagate a slime mutant who’s terrorizing the sewers of Crystal Cove. The gang receives resistance from the local law enforcement and their parents ,however, who want to use the strange happenings of the town as a tourist attraction. Meanwhile, the gang receive a call from a mysterious “Mr. E”, who tells them they’ve uncovered a even bigger mystery…one that should have remained hidden.

Cartoon Network really did a fantastic job here trying to capture the spirt of the original 25 episode run while bringing something new to the table. Mystery Incorporated acts like a sequel/reboot to the original series. The spookier tone from Scooby Doo! Where Are You! and Scooby Doo on Zombie Island has been brought back. The villian is actually pretty creepy and the humor is slightly darker than the previous couple series{Fred steals a body in one hilarious scene}.  One thing I really like is that Mystery Incorporated will have a over arcing storyline throughout the season instead of just standalone mysteries. Something that hasn’t been done since the 13 Ghosts of Scooby Doo. The animation is simple yet is effective. While I wish it was a bit more like Scooby Doo! Abracadara Doo, it is decemt amd is miles better than Get A Clue’s animation style.

There is also a attempt to expand on the gang’s personalities. Shaggy and Velma are dating. Daphne is pining is for Fred, who is completely oblivious due to be obsessed with trap making. Which leads me to one gripe with this episode: Shaggy not wanting to tell Scooby about his and Velma’s relationship for fear of upsetting their friendship. I thought this was rather dumb. And while I don’t mind it, I do hope Fred being oblivious doesn’t last throughout the entire season. There are some small changes to continuity like the gang’s hometown is now Crystal Cove instead of Coolsville. The Gang’s parents are now different from previous incarnations. Fred’s dad is now the Mayor of Crystal Cove. I think these changes actually work for the series. “Coolsville” may have sounded too silly for the spooky tone they are going for.

With some decent animation and a good spooky mystery, Scooby Doo! Mystery Incorporated is off to a good start. The series is a breath of fresh air after the horrendous Shaggy and Scooby Doo: Get A Clue!. If the first episode is any indication, I think this has the potential to be one of the best Scooby series to date and look forward to seeing more. The real mystery has just begun.
